The “Press for Progress” theme for International Women’s Day 2018 is a mantra and a way of life. For me, it means pursuing growth and finding yourself in this world of opportunity that we live in. It also means accepting who you are, how you are bringing the very best of you to any engagement in order to elevate yourself, and reach new heights without any constraints based on your gender, race or origin. I have personally found that accepting myself and not trying to compete with others who are different enables me to perform better and grow my career at Nielsen.
I started my professional career as a business analyst, then morphed into project manager, and eventually transitioned to my current role in operations. Along the way, I allowed myself to go on a journey of self-discovery, and I’ve never shied away from new opportunities.
Nielsen’s WIN employee resource group offers numerous opportunities for myself and my colleagues to press for progress. We have partnered with our counterparts in Europe to launch a mentorship program where members can be mentees/mentors to another associate in a different region. We hold talks featuring speakers from our local Human Resources team to educate staff about growth and development opportunities within Nielsen. From these efforts, we have seen our members raising their hands and taking part in their regions to ensure that we continue to develop women in our organization.
Gone are the days when organizations were dominated by one gender, though we still have work to do. At Nielsen, we see many women in leadership roles roles and more women are being promoted across the business. WIN wants to see more of this because an organization that is diverse and inclusive brings about hope and inspiration to associates/candidates who are looking at Nielsen as an employer. As for me, I want to continue to inspire the women in Africa and ensure that their horizons spread far and wide— the sky’s the limit for them! Onwards and upwards we go – a luta continua!
