Marbil is a Panel Relations Specialist lead, based in our Global Technology and Innovation Center in Oldsmar, Fla. Marbil recently attended Nielsen’s first ever Hispanic Employees Forum, and here he shares how the event helped him develop his professional skills, connect and engage with senior leaders, and grow his professional network.
I was one of the few Hispanic employees chosen to attend the very first Nielsen Hispanic Employees Forum Oct. 2-3, 2017 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The forum was a leadership development opportunity where Hispanic associates can engage with senior leaders, learn more about Nielsen’s business strategy, develop relationships and grow their professional network. Upon learning that I was invited to attend, I was excited and grateful that Nielsen wanted to invest in my professional development as well as in those of my Hispanic colleagues.
I felt at home the minute I arrived at the event. As soon as we arrived, we were given treats from different countries for us to try. When I registered, they gave me flag pins for Peru (my home country) and the U.S. (my current home) to pin to my name tag. It was cool to look around and see where everyone is from and was from originally.
Participants were able to experience an array of career-enriching experiences to gain visibility and grow at Nielsen, such as career development sessions from career coaches, career management offices where we could access open positions, facilitated workshops, and lunch with members of our senior leadership teams. In addition to these resources, we heard from multiple speakers from inside and outside of the company, who shared stories from their personal and professional life, the challenges they have overcome in their careers, and tips on how to be successful. I was inspired by those on stage and those I got to meet in person. My favorite story was from the former Vice Chairman of AT&T and CEO of Business Solutions & International. He shared his personal journey from childhood through his climb up the corporate ladder.
Our Hispanic Organization of Leaders in Action (HOLA) employee resource group also integrated its Innovation Challenge with the Hispanic Employees Forum. This challenge gives employees the opportunity to discuss their ideas, how they will make a business impact, and how we can better understand and engage with multicultural markets and consumers. We were lucky to hear from three finalists and be present for the announcement of the winner.
My favorite part of the forum, aside from hearing the speakers, was the networking reception on the first day. I really enjoyed meeting such an amazing group of employees who have made a positive impact in our company.I was also able to expand my Nielsen network and make new connections across the company.
Through attending the event, I learned that Nielsen truly cares about us personally and professionally. Nielsen really wants to see its employees grow within the company by giving them access to professional development opportunities like this one. I feel blessed to work for a company that takes their time to invest in its employees and to grow our talents. I know I will use many of the new skills I learned at the forum both inside and outside of work.
