The Key To Finding Your Voice At Nielsen

Marianela is a Senior Solutions Architect for Nielsen’s Technology Organization, based in Oldsmar, Florida. Nielsen has given her the trust and accountability she needed to raise her voice as a woman, feel confident about her contributions and grow her career.

Having your own voice and feeling confident as a woman can be hard in a male-dominated field. Throughout my career in computer science I kept asking, “Where are all the women?” My teams were always packed with guys, and I felt insecure and anxious about being taken seriously. At some point, however, I had to make a choice between being someone else’s shadow or having my own voice and building my confidence around it.

I joined Nielsen looking for new challenges and an opportunity to advance in my career—and it was definitely at first a challenge. The company was going through a lot of changes at the time, and I initially felt completely lost. However, the flexibility at Nielsen allowed me to redefine my role and build the right team to come up with the right solutions and ideas.

Technology is a very complex and constantly changing environment, and the Technology Organization at Nielsen is no exception. With so much technology to play around with, many solutions to build, all the possible data sources in the market, and hundreds of ways to access the information, we had to rapidly organize ourselves and start measuring our actions to be successful and efficient. We developed big data solutions that enabled much faster access to insights and, consequently, more efficient and transparent relationships with our clients.

Keeping your team and clients motivated and engaged during the process is not easy. They have to believe in you and to build that trust, you must have a voice. In my case, being transparent with the people around me and conveying trust in everything I deliver is key. Nielsen has given me something that no other company has given me: an atmosphere where I can feel comfortable being myself.

By creating such an atmosphere, I’ve been able to network with people from all around the world, develop leadership skills that help me bring out the best from each person on my team, and take advantage of the great accountability and trust that the company grants me in order to raise my voice and build confidence around each project I work on.

I feel proud and excited for the work I do, and I know my team feels the same way. We all have a voice, and we value how different and unique we are, because that’s the best way to keep growing and innovating. As a team, we never forget that, in the end, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts!
